What started as a small acorn is now a beautiful Killhope red willow squirrel.
The skeleton for the squirrel was created by our resident blacksmith Alex Sowden of Hammer and Hound Forge with the design concept and willow weaving being undertaken by Ruth Stephenson of Sylvan Skills and Jo-Anne Bolton of Abundant Earth.
Ruth and Jo worked with local schools, Wolsingham Primary; Frosterley Primary; Stanhope Barrington CofE Primary and Upper Durham Dales Federation of Schools which comprises Wearhead Primary, Rookhope Primary and St John’s Chapel Primary. The children and staff helped to create the amazing squirrel tail as well as making willow bird feeders for their school gardens.
The squirrel is part of as wider project, which was originally funded through Arts Council England’s Covid Recovery Fund, which has taken 2 years to complete.
