New for 2023, art installation Bling Box takes its inspiration from the world class collection of spar boxes at Killhope Lead Mining Museum. It is a modern interpretation of the decorative mini grottoes that the Victorian lead miners made with their bonny bits, the colourful mineral crystals that they collected and then put together in their limited spare time.
Instead of removing hundreds of minerals from this protected landscape Bling Box is made with plaster casts of a selection of small mineral samples.
There are approximately 600 of these casts that have been painted and decorated by school children from the region and visitors to the museum during a series of workshops led by Bridget Kennedy 2022. Half were taken home by their creators and half were left for the construction of Bling Box.
