Planning your visit
Admission is free for teachers making a preliminary planning visit. Contact us to arrange a suitable date. Useful information for your visit:
Before your visit
School visits to Killhope involve a lot of time outdoors and an underground mine trip, the weather can be changeable and underfoot conditions can be wet and uneven.
Ensure your group is suitably clothed with coats and sturdy footwear and if you are going underground:
- wellington boots are essential – we have a limited supply of spare ones if you need them
- spare socks, gloves and hats are always a good idea
- Maximum party size: 75 individuals (if you have a larger group please contact us on 01388 537 505 to discuss your requirements and options)
- Minimum party size: 10 individuals (your group can number less than 10 but the cost for the group will be a flat rate of £60)
We break larger parties into smaller groups of up to 12/14 pupils/staff for underground visits and/or to rotate around the activities.
Each group (of 12/14) will be led by a Cultural Assistant, however each group requires at least one member of school staff. Ideally each group should have two members of school staff, this is in case any pupils need to leave the underground tour early for example.
During your visit
On arrival you will be met by a Cultural Assistant and bags can be secured in the storage area, toilets will be located and housekeeping will be explained, including the fire assembly point and health and safety.
The majority of schools bring packed lunches however we do have a café on site. If you want to use the café please inform us when booking your visit, as you must pre-book.
We have several picnic tables on the site including one large communal table. If the weather is poor on the day of your visit we will try to locate you indoors where possible.
We have a gift shop that sells books, confectionary and souvenirs items. We can schedule a shop visit for your school as part of your trip. This must be requested prior to arrival.
Goodie bags are also available for £2.00. Please pre-order.
£6 per pupil
£6 per staff
There is one free staff member/adult place for every 14 pupils
